Madelaine Moore

She/her or they/them. I am Artistic Director of female-focussed theatre company The Thelmas, and also work as a Theatre Director on a freelance basis. I am one of the OV12 2020/21 cohort.

I work in two main areas; professional text-based theatre, and in participatory settings particularly within the male prison estate. I have extensive experience working with non-actors from so-called 'hard to reach' groups on devised and text-based performance. I also have a strong track record of working with new writing, both as a director and dramaturg.

My work is strongly informed by my interest in disrupting traditional gendered narratives and tackling big ideas through a feminist lens. I enjoy exploring themes of social justice in surprising and irreverent ways through playfulness with form, and drilling down into common tropes and subverting them.

I find myself most inspired when working with thematic and/or dramatic complexity, humour that is so wrong it's right, and I am not afraid of mess, ambiguity, and risk. Having said that, without rigour it all means very little! I work within a minimalistic, contemporary aesthetic with a naturalistic, psychologically detailed performance style. I am interested in exploring working with sound, film and other digital disciplines.
