I am a freelance director, co-founder of Conflicted Theatre & I am currently the Associate Director on Touching the Void, which is running at Duke of York’s Theatre in London’s West End.
Conflicted Theatre’s mission from the outset was to create new work that attempted to tell story through action & image rather than leaning too heavily on spoken word. We write & devise new work, which is sometimes immersive and/or site specific. I love putting the audience at the center of the action so that they become entangled, unable distance themselves from the themes of the show.
That said, while pursuing my masters I enjoyed reading more & more plays & as a result I have directed Tender Napalm by Philip Ridley & assisted on shows like The Cherry Orchard, Mad Forest & How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found. When creating end-on shows I still begin by trying to work out how to generate a sense of complicity between the characters & audience. I want audience to feel as if they have actively been part of an event, rather than simply watching from the safety of a dark auditorium.
