Shan was born and raised in Hong Kong. She studied Literature at the University of Hong Kong before relocating to London. She has been a producer/director at the BBC for eleven years. Her works have been broadcast on BBC 2, BBC World, BBC Language Services, BBC Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 4, 6 Music and Asian Network. She was nominated for Best Director by BBC Audio Awards for her debut BBC 4 Radio Drama, Tiger Girls, in 2018/9.
Her first short film, Merry-Go- Round, was the winner of the Borough Film Fund Award, Film London. Her long short, …May Wong, was premiered in London Royal Opera House and invited to Hong Kong Arts Festival, Beijing International Film Festival and was invited to Verona Film Festival. Her theatre, The Pilgrimage of the Heart, funded by the Arts Council England, had a four-week run in London and Slough.
In 2019, she was commissioned by BBC Radio 4 and Wellcome Trust to develop a science based radio drama after making Tiger Girls in 2018. In 2017, her feature film, The Vanishing Time, is commissioned by Hong Kong Art Development Council and is selected in JETS co-production scheme during Berlin film Festival. In 2015-16, her feature project, Nocturnal, was selected by Film London Microwave award for development. In 2014, she was shortlisted For film London’s London Calling Plus as well as Creative England’s iFeatures award. In 2011, her feature film, My Half Night with him, was shortlisted by Film London Microwave Film Fund.
