Barry Fitzgerald

Artist Maker Director Performer Facilitator

I'm a queer, Irish performer and maker based between the UK and Ireland. My pronouns are he/they.

My practice is concerned with the intersections of identity. Playing with form and connecting with communities is at its heart - experimental work that is aesthetically rich, accessible, thought-provoking and fun.

I've worked with companies such as Complicité and Punchdrunk, and devised work shown at venues including the Arcola Theatre, Birmingham REP, Bush Theatre, Camden People’s Theatre, Contact Theatre, The Glory, Hackney Showroom and Shoreditch Town Hall. I'm currently an artist-in-residence at VISUAL Carlow and associate artist with Outbox Theatre, a company of LGBTQIA+ creatives who ‘make theatre queerly’.

An experienced facilitator, director and teacher, I've worked on projects with the Almeida Theatre, ArtsEd London, Barbican, Gendered Intelligence, Hackney Shed, London Bubble, Mountview, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Royal Court, Unicorn Theatre and University of East London among others.

Outside theatre I have worked on the festival team at the BFI, helping produce film festivals such as the BFI London Film Festival and BFI Flare LGBTQIA+ Festival.
