Short Film Director
Hello, I'm Julia (she/her). I'm a director and producer of theatre and short film. I'm also the Artistic Director of 20 South Street, a creative home for collaboration created through my admiration of practitioners Robert Lepage, Declan Donnellan, and Katie Mitchell, and the collective ethos of Steppenwolf Theatre Company. You can read more at www.20southstreet.co.uk.
New writing and collaborating with writers to develop their work have been a core part of my career as an artist. This began when I was a theatre actor working on new plays between 1990 and 2005 and continued as Joint Artistic Director of the new writing/new work company Weaver Hughes Ensemble from 1997-2009. A new play also led me to begin directing in 2007 when I read Thin Toes by Laura Stevens. Premiering and developing new work has been central to 20 South Street's development and my freelance theatre directing career.
Recent theatre directing credits include the revival of Sparks by Simon Longman (Upper Hand Theatre), the London premieres of What I Really Think of My Husband: Thomas Hardy and his Wives by David Pinner (And Tomorrow Theatre Company) and Still Here by Mari Lloyd *Standing Ovation Nomination from London Pub Theatres (20 South Street), and the national tour of Mark Glentworth's Seven and a half Years *OffFest Nomination from OffWestEnd (MMGMUSIC Productions).
The original short film, To Womb It May Concern by Georgia Lovell which I produced and directed is currently on its festival circuit in the UK and Europe.
