Alex Hurst

Theatre Director Assistant Writer Dramaturg Filmmaker

He/Him

I'm Alex, a Queer director, writer, and theatre-maker from South Yorkshire and based in London. My journey in the arts has been shaped by collaborations with some of the UK's most renowned theatre-makers, including directors Rachel O'Riordan, Diane Page, and Abigail Graham, as well as writers Simon Stephens, Tanika Gupta, and Roy Williams.

At the heart of my artistic practice lies a deep passion for reimagining voices found within literature, plays, and cinematic narratives. I'm dedicated to exploring the rich tapestry of mythology, the allure of camp aesthetics, and the transformative power of genre in crafting compelling new stories for the stage. I'm intrigued by how the perception of genre can profoundly influence the meaning and impact of a narrative, and I'm committed to contributing to the creation of a dynamic and inclusive canon of queer adventures and mythologies.

I was the Resident Director at the Lyric Hammersmith between 2020 and 2022, and I hold a postgraduate degree from the MA Theatre Directing program at Birkbeck College, University of London. Beyond my work as a director, I am an accomplished Assistant Director and Workshop Facilitator. I've had the privilege of designing and delivering classes in acting, directing, and collaboration with designers for esteemed institutions like the Young Lyric, London Southbank University, and Wimbledon College of Arts. I'm have recently completed work directing a short film on Super 8 and am currently co-writing my first play.
