Alexandra Donnachie

Writer Performer Theatre Maker

I am Alexandra 'Alex' Donnachie (she/her) and I'm originally from South London. Whilst I originally trained as an actress, I was fortunate to have the fact that I might not (probably won't...) be in work 100% of the time drummed into me. Therefore, my classmates and I were always encouraged to explore multiple disciplines and less traditional forms of theatre including puppetry and post-modern work so we might have ways of creating a sustainable career in the theatre even when not under a contract to a venue or company at any time. I really enjoyed the sense of control this brought to me and the confidence it then gave me moving from full time training into the industry. My dissertation equivalent was an all female comedy play called A Womb With A View which I co-wrote with another writer-performer and we were thrilled when it did a lot better than we ever could have imagined; we toured it for a bit, were nominated for the NSDF Edinburgh Award and even enjoyed a mini West End Transfer in 2013. It was that experience which solidified my passion for writing and making work in addition to performing existing scripts and I've been doing a mixture of all of the above ever since!
