My name is Holly Parnell She/Her and I am currently directing Necessary Work, a play by William Thacker at the Matchstick Pie House, Deptford.
I graduated from Rose Bruford in 2017 from the American Theatre Arts course. Since then, I have been creating work for my own theatre company Riot Road Theatre. Riot Road is a verbatim theatre company that exposes issues of political and social interest. Our debuted play Prefer Not To Say explored the inequality and prejudice that is still rife towards people of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Looking at my work, I have an interesting eye and enjoy creating distorted visions that create complex perceptions of the world as we know it. I strive to push boundaries and challenge form, exploring work from multiple angles and interrogate the text in a quirky and playful way.
A writer that I have a huge amount of admiration for is Philip Ridley. His courageous writing is what originally sparked my passion for theatre and changed the face of what theatre has to be.
With my work, I want to champion the working class and create opportunities for those who come from working-class and minority backgrounds. Championing their work and creating a platform for their voices to be heard.
